Which cloud computing model is right for me?

Cloud computing, in short, is on-demand access to a shared pool of configure computing resources. This will enable you to avoid a lot of upfront infrastructure costs and focus on your IT model without having to deal with infrastructure and allow you to get your applications up and running faster.

This will provide you with better manageability, less maintenance and enables IT needs to more rapidly adjust resources to meet fluctuating and unpredictable business demand.

The advantages of moving to the Cloud are well established. The notion that somebody else can do the ‘heavy lifting’ when it comes to provisioning applications and infrastructure is appealing for organizations that wish to focus on their core business and avoid the distractions of information technology.

In essence operational responsibility is ceded to a third party organisation that maintains the application in the cloud, i.e. off-promises over the web in a dedicated and secure computing facility. This confers a number of advantages over traditional on-premise approaches. For a start, users can access the applications using nothing more than a web browser on a low specification computer, laptop, mobile device or smart phone and the applications are available on-tap 24/7 from anywhere in the world. This freedom to access applications on demand is not only hugely convenient but also has advantages for organizations with mobile workforces.

Problem: Quite often companies need to install a tool and it may require an IT team to buy, build and configure web servers, databases, or the required hardware and software to run and manage the application, define user access or security, and then add the application to existing systems management or application performance monitoring (APM) tools. Once installed and setup, it can be complex and costly over time for an IT team to maintain all of the resources.

Solution: Syntropy Cloud makes it easy and eliminates the complexities as well as reduces your costs. It is simple: Users just need to log into the control panel using a web browser and start using the interface.

There are three main categories of cloud computing services. Below is an overview of each to help you decide which one best fits your needs:

What is PaaS?

Platform as a service (PaaS) is a cloud computing model which provides a platform that delivers a wide array of applications over the Internet. It is the cloud computing model most closely associated with software and web application development because it allows customers to develop, run and manage web applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the IT infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an application. This offers developers several advantages such as allowing developers to frequently change or upgrade operating system features and empower development teams to better collaborate on projects.

Syntropy Cloud delivers both the hardware and software tools needed to its end users as a service. This does not typically replace a business’s entire infrastructure; instead it allows your company to pick and choose what parts of your IT infrastructure would benefit and it allows you to quickly scale up or down depending on your needs.

What is SaaS?

Software as a service, or SaaS in layman’s terms, is “on-demand software” usually accessed by users with a web browser. Typically, software is licensed on a subscription basis and centrally hosted. SaaS has become a common delivery model for many business applications and has been incorporated into the strategy of all leading enterprise software companies. Some examples of this software licensing and delivery model include office and management software, customer relationship management (CRM), accounting software, software development tools, CAD software, management information systems (MIS), payroll processing software, DBMS software, content management (CM), human resource management (HRM), invoicing, enterprise resource planning (ERP), gamification and virtualization.

One of the main advantages about using this solution is that you can reduce your IT support costs by outsourcing hardware and software maintenance and support to the Syntropy Cloud. We can handle all of your installations, maintenance and security.

What is IaaS?

IaaS is the most basic cloud-service model where providers offer computers – physical or (more often) virtual machines – and other resources. Pools of hypervisors within the cloud operational system can support large numbers of virtual machines and the ability to scale services up and down according to customers' varying requirements.

Syntropy Cloud simplifies your life by providing the physical computing resources, location, security, data partitioning, backup and scaling. We also provide additional resources such as the hypervisor, raw block storage, file and object storage, virtual machine disk-image library, firewalls, load balancers, IP addresses, software bundles and virtual local area networks (VLANs).

Physical as well as electronic protections ensure that your data is safe from environmental and other disruptions. Syntropy Cloud's infrastructure provides optimum availability, relying on virtualization technologies for total resilience in the event of a failure. Customer privacy and segregation are always maintained.

Built-in Security

Syntropy Cloud's infrastructure, platforms, and services are all protected by the highest levels of security.

Our network and security monitoring systems provide important safeguards, including distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection and password brute-force detection on Syntropy Cloud Accounts.

Among the additional security features that are also included are these:

  • Built-in firewalls – You are in control because you have the flexibility to create built-in firewall rules – ranging from totally public to completely private. And when your instances reside within a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) subnet, you can control egress as well as ingress.
  • Secure access – Customer access points, or API endpoints, enable secure HTTP access (HTTPS) allowing you to establish secure communication sessions with your Syntropy Cloud services using SSL.
  • Built-in firewalls – You are in control because you have the flexibility to create built-in firewall rules – ranging from totally public to completely private. And when your instances reside within a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) subnet, you can control egress as well as ingress.
  • Unique users – You control the level of access your own users have to your Syntropy Cloud infrastructure services. With Syntropy Cloud, each user can have unique security credentials, so no need for shared passwords. This allows for the use of security practices such as role separation and least privilege.
  • Multi-level Authentication – Syntropy Cloud provides built-in support for multi-level authentification for use with Syntropy Cloud Accounts.
  • Private Subnets – Our virtual Private Cloud (VPC) service allows you to add a layer of network security to your instances by creating private subnets. You can even add an IPsec VPN tunnel between your home network and your Syntropy Cloud VPC.
  • Encrypted data storage – Customers can have their stored data and objects encrypted automatically using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256, the secure encryption standard that utilizes 256-bit encryption keys.
  • Dedicated connection option – Syntropy Cloud allows you to establish a dedicated network connection from your premises to Syntropy Cloud. This dedicated connection uses industry standard 802.1q VLANs, and can be partitioned into multiple logical connections. This gives you the flexibility to access both public and private IP environments within your Syntropy Cloud private cloud.
  • Isolated Syntropy GovCloud – For customers who must comply with US ITAR regulations, Syntropy Cloud provides an entirely separate region called Syntropy Cloud GovCloud (US) that provides an environment where customers can run ITAR-compliant applications, and provides special endpoints that utilize only FIPS 140-2 encryption.
  • Dedicated, hardware-based crypto key storage option – For customers who must use Hardware Security Module (HSM) appliances for cryptographic key storage, Syntropy HSMCloud provides a highly secure and convenient way to store and manage keys.

Syntropy Cloud's cloud infrastructure provides numerous other built-in security features.

Verification = Peace of Mind

Syntropy Cloud cloud infrastructure is among the safest and and most secure in the industry. With our use of advanced virtualization technologies, customers can't walk through the data centers and experience first-hand all the security controls that are in place.

This underscores the importance of the numerous third-party certifications and evaluations that Syntropy Cloud has undergone.

Sharing the Security Responsibility

Because you are building systems on top of the Syntropy Cloud cloud infrastructure, there is a shared responsibility: We have secured the infrastructure and the customer must secure anything built on this infrastructure.

Consequently, there are a number of security-related decisions you will need to make and certain controls that you will need to configure. Our security engineers work with you to assist with this process.
